From the President

WECCC President Lise Lehoux

This club is more than canoeing and kayaking, it’s about forming friendships and staying fit all year long, at any age.

My first time in a kayak was in 2020 when my neighbour asked me to come out with her, she asked me 3 times, I finally said yes and rented a kayak. Within 15 minutes on the water, I was in love with it. I bought a Pelican and was out as much as possible. Cedar creek became my favourite spot where I enjoyed the fragrant smell of lily pads along with gentle sounds of birds. My paddles in the water, sun on my skin, wind in my hair along with all the sights you don’t see from shore, soothed and refreshed my soul.

By the end of 2020 I had learned and read much about kayaking and knew this was a sport I wanted to enjoy more of. I rented different kayaks from Pelee Wings then finally in December I took that financial plunge and ordered a Delta14.  Kayaking had become a popular sport during Covid summer days and they were hard to come by. Naturally many items became backordered and this happened with the Delta I had ordered. Finally in June of 2021 my baby arrived! My first item to check off was to join W.E.C.C.C.! The “social distancing” that kayaking allowed was a perfect fit for my life.

I attended the family camp that August with 6 of my children, and we all enjoyed ourselves. The fellowship others showed to me and my family was beautiful. On this trip, we kayaked many beautiful areas and in the waters of Georgian Bay, I was taught the techniques of self rescue and helping others be rescued. It was quite a work out!

This club has brought many fun events into my life in the past year; camping in Tobermory, paddling in Georgian Bay, a full day of bicycling on Pelee Island, being part of the crew on the Montreal Canoe and weekday evening paddles around the creeks in our area. For those who enjoy Volleyball and Curling, this is offered when the kayaks and bikes were hibernating. A monthly Saturday morning breakfast kept the group together along with Google meetings.

You can be as involved as you are comfortable with BUT should you want to get out of your comfort zone, like me becoming president after only a year in the club, you will be encouraged for it!

Come on out and join us on one of our many events, and if you enjoy it… be a part of something bigger and JOIN THE CLUB!
